MAJOR ARCANA
The great spiritual journey – identity, awakening, transformation, choice, consequence and integration.
0 — THE FOOL — “All are welcome to seek.”
Why it fits: The Fool begins without having all the answers. The sacred journey starts with willingness to step onto the path.
I — THE MAGICIAN — “Creativity is sacred and meant to move through us.”
Why it fits: The Magician takes what is available and creates with it. Inspiration becomes participation.
II — THE HIGH PRIESTESS — “We believe the Divine can speak to us directly.”
Why it fits: The High Priestess represents intuition, inner knowing and direct encounter with mystery—no spiritual middleman required.
III — THE EMPRESS — “Plants are sacred and should be approached with respect.”
Why it fits: The Empress is fertile Earth, growth, nourishment and the abundance of living creation. She doesn’t merely possess the garden; she participates in relationship with it.
IV — THE EMPEROR — “Freedom and responsibility belong together.”
Why it fits: The Emperor represents structure, authority and stewardship. Real authority isn’t simply power—it accepts responsibility for what that power affects.
V — THE HIEROPHANT — “We are all students and teachers.”
Why it fits: Traditionally the spiritual teacher, our Hierophant takes wisdom off the pedestal. Everyone can teach; everyone still has something to learn.
VI — THE LOVERS — “We belong to one another without owning one another.”
Why it fits: The Lovers represents relationship, union and values freely chosen. Connection becomes strongest when neither person must surrender sovereignty to belong.
VII — THE CHARIOT — “Courage is not the absence of fear.”
Why it fits: The Chariot moves forward while holding opposing forces together. Courage is steering despite fear—not waiting until fear disappears.
VIII — STRENGTH — “Compassion does not require tolerating harm.”
Why it fits: Traditional Strength isn’t brute force; it’s power guided by compassion and restraint. Gentleness can have teeth. 😂
IX — THE HERMIT — “Silence and solitude are sacred.”
Why it fits: The Hermit withdraws from noise long enough to hear what cannot be heard in the crowd.
X — WHEEL OF FORTUNE — “Life moves in cycles; death is transformation, not damnation.”
Why it fits: The Wheel teaches impermanence: beginnings become endings, endings become beginnings, and nothing remains one shape forever.
XI — JUSTICE — “Justice is sacred.”
Why it fits: This one hardly needed us. 😂 Justice traditionally represents truth, consequence, fairness and accountability. Our card simply names the sacred principle underneath it.
XII — THE HANGED MAN — “Questions are sacred too.”
Why it fits: The Hanged Man willingly sees life upside down. Questioning what we assumed was true can reveal an entirely different view.
XIII — DEATH — “Death is sacred too.”
Why it fits: Tarot Death was never simply physical death; it represents endings, transition and transformation. Our interpretation refuses to make endings spiritually dirty.
XIV — TEMPERANCE — “Energy can be transformed.”
Why it fits: Temperance pours one vessel into another, blending and transmuting rather than destroying. What exists can change form.
XV — THE DEVIL — “We reject manipulation, coercion, and control.”
Why it fits: The Devil represents bondage, unhealthy attachment and the forces that convince us we cannot leave. Our teaching names the chains.
XVI — THE TOWER — “Sacred texts should never be used to excuse harm.”
Why it fits: The Tower destroys structures that cannot survive truth. Something being old, revered or institutional does not make harm sacred.
XVII — THE STAR — “We are not born condemned.”
Why it fits: After the Tower comes nakedness, hope, renewal and grace beneath an open sky. Nothing about simply arriving here makes a human being spiritually guilty.
XVIII — THE MOON — “Not every struggle is purely physical.”
Why it fits: The Moon belongs to dreams, unseen influences, instinct, subconscious experience and realities that aren’t always obvious in daylight.
XIX — THE SUN — “Joy, laughter, and play are sacred.”
Why it fits: 😂 The Sun didn’t even pretend to resist us. Vitality, delight, freedom, warmth and the holiness of being gloriously alive.
XX — JUDGEMENT — “Accountability comes before restoration.”
Why it fits: Judgement is awakening, reckoning and answering the call to examine what has been done. Renewal follows truth; it doesn’t replace it.
XXI — THE WORLD — “The Divine is everywhere and within everyone.”
Why it fits: The World is wholeness, integration and recognition that apparently separate pieces belong to one living whole. There could not be a better ending.
SWORDS
Mind, truth, discernment, conflict, wounds, boundaries and accountability.
ACE OF SWORDS — “We honor knowledge, evidence, experience, and discernment.”
Why it fits: The Ace is the blade of clarity: seeing what is actually there and cutting through confusion.
TWO OF SWORDS — “We listen with mind, heart, and gut.”
Why it fits: The Two stands at a decision where intellect alone may not settle the matter. Discernment sometimes requires the whole self.
THREE OF SWORDS — “We honor wounds that cannot always be seen.”
Why it fits: The traditional pierced heart represents pain that may have no visible bruise. Invisible wounds are wounds nevertheless.
FOUR OF SWORDS — “Rest is sacred.”
Why it fits: Tarot basically handed us this card already made. 😂 Stop. Recover. Be still. Rest is part of the work.
FIVE OF SWORDS — “No one else needs to be wrong for you to belong.”
Why it fits: The Five asks what kind of victory leaves everyone wounded. Being right isn’t worth much if belonging requires somebody else’s defeat.
SIX OF SWORDS — “No war is holy.”
Why it fits: The Six leaves conflict behind and crosses toward another shore. The journey isn’t about glorifying the battle; it’s about moving beyond it.
SEVEN OF SWORDS — “Spirituality should never require pretending.”
Why it fits: Traditionally associated with deception, concealment and masks, our Seven calls the seeker back to authenticity.
EIGHT OF SWORDS — “Consent is sacred.”
Why it fits: Restriction, powerlessness and constrained choice define the traditional Eight. Our card answers: no one gets spiritual permission to bind another person’s autonomy.
NINE OF SWORDS — “Growth does not require shame.”
Why it fits: The Nine is the midnight mind—guilt, fear, anguish and self-punishment. Growth can come from awareness without requiring psychological flogging at 3 A.M. 😂
TEN OF SWORDS — “Forgiveness must never be forced.”
Why it fits: After betrayal or deep injury, nobody else gets to dictate your healing timetable or demand reconciliation as proof of goodness.
PAGE OF SWORDS — “Words are not inherently sinful.”
Why it fits: The Page explores ideas, language, questions and messages. Words are tools; meaning, intention and effect determine how they are wielded.
KNIGHT OF SWORDS — “Integrity is the foundation of character.”
Why it fits: The Knight has plenty of conviction and momentum. Integrity determines whether that powerful mind becomes courageous action or reckless certainty.
QUEEN OF SWORDS — “Boundaries are sacred.”
Why it fits: 😂 Possibly the most Queen-of-Swords sentence ever written. Clear-eyed compassion does not require leaving the gate unlocked.
KING OF SWORDS — “No spiritual leader is above question or accountability.”
Why it fits: Mature intellectual authority welcomes scrutiny rather than demanding exemption from it.
CUPS
Love, emotion, grief, relationship, belonging, reciprocity and the mature heart.
ACE OF CUPS — “Every person has inherent worth.”
Why it fits: Before anything has been achieved, the cup already overflows. Worth begins before performance.
TWO OF CUPS — “Gratitude and reciprocity are sacred.”
Why it fits: Two beings meet and exchange freely. Love isn’t simply giving or receiving; it is relationship moving both ways.
THREE OF CUPS — “Hospitality is sacred.”
Why it fits: Gathering, celebration, friendship, food and making room for one more chair—this Three was already heading for the porch. 😂
FOUR OF CUPS — “The sacred lives in ordinary life.”
Why it fits: The Four can become so preoccupied with what is missing that it fails to see what is quietly being offered right now.
FIVE OF CUPS — “Grief is sacred and has no timetable.”
Why it fits: Loss deserves mourning. The remaining cups don’t invalidate the ones that spilled.
SIX OF CUPS — “Children are whole human beings.”
Why it fits: Childhood, innocence and memory are central to the traditional Six. Children aren’t unfinished adults waiting to become worthy of respect.
SEVEN OF CUPS — “We seek connection rather than conversion.”
Why it fits: Many cups, many possibilities, many visions. We don’t need everyone to select our cup before we can meet them as human beings.
EIGHT OF CUPS — “Atonement means returning to at-one-ment.”
Why it fits: The Eight walks away from what no longer holds the soul and journeys toward deeper wholeness. Atonement becomes return rather than punishment.
NINE OF CUPS — “Enough can be sacred.”
Why it fits: The traditional satisfaction card gets a beautiful correction from us: abundance isn’t endless acquisition. Sometimes the miracle is realizing this is enough.
TEN OF CUPS — “Nobody should have to stop loving someone in order to belong.”
Why it fits: Family, community and emotional belonging reach their fullest expression when love isn’t used as an entrance exam.
PAGE OF CUPS — “Emotions are not inherently wrong.”
Why it fits: The Page meets feeling with curiosity instead of judgement. A feeling can knock on the door without becoming a moral failure.
KNIGHT OF CUPS — “Sexuality is not inherently sinful.”
Why it fits: Romance, desire, emotional expression and embodied affection can be approached with reverence rather than inherited shame.
QUEEN OF CUPS — “Love people as they are today.”
Why it fits: The Queen’s compassion meets the actual person before her—not the imaginary improved version she hopes to manufacture.
KING OF CUPS — “Purity of heart means seeking to do no harm.”
Why it fits: Emotional mastery isn’t lack of feeling. It is a powerful heart governed by care, responsibility and intention.
PENTACLES
Body, Earth, food, work, resources, stewardship, practical care and legacy.
ACE OF PENTACLES — “Respect for life is the foundation.”
Why it fits: Every garden begins with the seed and the ground beneath it. Before material life can flourish, life itself must matter.
TWO OF PENTACLES — “Health is whole-person care.”
Why it fits: The Two juggles interconnected needs. Health isn’t one isolated variable; it is an ongoing act of balance.
THREE OF PENTACLES — “Our work should reflect our values.”
Why it fits: Craftsmanship, cooperation and building something well. What our hands repeatedly create should resemble what our mouths claim to believe.
FOUR OF PENTACLES — “The body is a temple.”
Why it fits: The Four concerns protection, security and what we hold. The body is something entrusted to us—not something to despise or abandon.
FIVE OF PENTACLES — “People and life come before institutions and profit.”
Why it fits: THIS ONE. 😂 Traditional imagery places suffering people outside a glowing religious building. If the institution is thriving while living
beings are abandoned at its door, the priorities are upside down.
SIX OF PENTACLES — “How we treat those with the least power reveals who we are.”
Why it fits: The Six explicitly deals with resources, generosity and unequal power. The true test isn’t how we behave toward those who can reward us.
SEVEN OF PENTACLES — “Sacred time is not confined to a calendar.”
Why it fits: The gardener waits for what was planted to ripen. You cannot yell at a tomato because Outlook says harvest was scheduled for Tuesday. 😂
EIGHT OF PENTACLES — “Quiet service is sacred.”
Why it fits: Repeated work, practice and humble effort—the things done well when nobody is applauding.
NINE OF PENTACLES — “Nature is sacred.”
Why it fits: The traditional Nine stands in cultivated abundance. Wealth becomes more than currency: land, beauty, food, life, independence and relationship with Earth.
TEN OF PENTACLES — “We honor those who came before us without being bound by them.”
Why it fits: Legacy, ancestry, tradition and inheritance are the heart of this Ten. Receive the roots; don’t mistake them for chains.
PAGE OF PENTACLES — “We honor the body’s natural wisdom and the right to informed choice.”
Why it fits: The Page studies the physical world carefully. Learn, observe, gather information—and then make conscious choices about what has been entrusted to you.
KNIGHT OF PENTACLES — “Animals are fellow beings, not lesser beings.”
Why it fits: The traditional mounted Knight becomes something much richer: human and animal aren’t master and equipment. They are beings sharing the journey.
QUEEN OF PENTACLES — “Food is sacred nourishment, not a measure of spiritual worth.”
Why it fits: Hearth, garden, food, body and care belong naturally to this Queen. Nourishment isn’t a purity contest.
KING OF PENTACLES — “We invest in the world we want to create.”
Why it fits: The King has resources and material influence. His spiritual question is not how much do I own? but what does what I own help create?
WANDS
Calling, choice, action, courage, spiritual sovereignty, responsibility and what we create with our fire.
ACE OF WANDS — “Discovering and living your purpose is sacred.”
Why it fits: The first spark. Inspiration. Calling. The moment something inside says, GO.
TWO OF WANDS — “The cross can represent the crossroads of choice.”
Why it fits: The traditional Two stands looking toward possible futures. A crossroads isn’t merely somewhere we stand; it is somewhere we choose.
THREE OF WANDS — “Mystery is sacred.”
Why it fits: The Three looks beyond the visible horizon. Choosing a direction doesn’t require seeing the entire road.
FOUR OF WANDS — “We are all connected.”
Why it fits: Homecoming, celebration and community remind us that the journey isn’t only individual—we live inside relationships.
FIVE OF WANDS — “The Divine does not belong to a side.”
Why it fits: Five people waving sticks at one another while everyone thinks they’re right. 😂 God does not automatically become the sixth person on whichever team is yelling loudest.
SIX OF WANDS — “No person owns truth.”
Why it fits: Victory and public recognition can easily become certainty and ego. Applause is not proof of infallibility.
SEVEN OF WANDS — “Your relationship with the Divine belongs to you.”
Why it fits: The Seven stands its ground. Spiritual sovereignty means listening to others without surrendering your own sacred relationship.
EIGHT OF WANDS — “No savior is coming to do our work for us.”
Why it fits: Movement, momentum and action. The Eight doesn’t wait beside the mailbox for enlightenment to come mow the grass. 😂 Participate.
NINE OF WANDS — “We do not teach eternal damnation.”
Why it fits: The battered Nine has survived fear and intimidation and remains standing. Faith need not terrorize people into staying.
TEN OF WANDS — “What we mean by sin.”
Why it fits: Our meaning—acting without love and against the wholeness of life—fits a card about burden and consequence. Harm creates weight. Responsibility means recognizing what our actions carry.
PAGE OF WANDS — “Life is a school for the soul.”
Why it fits: The eternal beginner: curious, enthusiastic, inexperienced and ready to learn through actually living.
KNIGHT OF WANDS — “We understand ‘demons’ more broadly than religious imagery.”
Why it fits: The fiery Knight goes looking for dragons to fight; ours learns that some monsters are destructive patterns, fear, hatred, obsession, cruelty or forces within ourselves.
QUEEN OF WANDS — “God is not an abusive parent.”
Why it fits: Her power is warm, protective and fiercely alive without needing terror or domination. Sacred authority can nurture without controlling.
KING OF WANDS — “Peace is more than the absence of war.”
Why it fits: Mature fire becomes vision. Leadership isn’t merely ending destruction—it is having the courage and imagination to build what comes next.
